World Oceans Day
Did you know: oceans cover over 70 percent of the globe? But we have explored less than 5 percent of them. In fact, we know less about the oceans on earth, than we know about the planet Mars.
Today is World Oceans Day, an annual day of celebration – a day to honor the world’s oceans and take the time to appreciate the great value the sea offers us.
The oceans are an immense natural resource. They supply a critical source of nutrition – fish – which provides 15 percent of global protein needs. Oceans are essential for world trade and play a critical role in regulating the Earth’s climate. Within the ocean’s depths we will undoubtedly find solutions for growing global energy needs. Among these many things, oceans provide the fishing resources that are the foundation of the companies that make up the Pacific Alliance for Sustainable Tuna.
As an organization whose members depend on healthy oceans, we take our responsibility to care for the oceans very seriously. We engage with scientists, researchers, governments, and NGOs to continuously better our practice and ensure that we are managing our natural resources respectfully and in a way that ensure the oceans will thrive in the years to come.
The celebration of World Oceans Day coincides this year with a renewed focus our members have on sustainability. In addition to our ongoing efforts to ensure that we meet the highest international scientific standards for sustainability, our members continue to strive for certification by the Marine Stewardship Council. We are proud of our decision to pursue this certification along with our other investments in sustainability. As an Alliance, we pledge to maintain healthy and productive ocean and utilize ocean resources in a sustainable way that benefits present and future generations. We will remain the industry leaders in conservation and sustainability.
On this day, I hope you will join us in remembering our role as stewards of the ocean. Please continue the celebration of World Oceans Day. Visit the site. Get engaged. Talk with your friends.
